01

Start with the vehicle and the key

Have the make, model and year ready, along with a description of the key you normally use. A metal key, remote-head key and push-button-start fob can require different equipment and procedures. Tell us whether all keys are missing or you still have a working spare.

Those details help establish whether the requested work is supported for your vehicle. A key that looks similar to another model's key may still need different programming. Before buying a replacement online, discuss compatibility and whether it can be used for the job you have in mind.

Make the parking location easy to find

A street address may not be enough in a large parking area. Include the business or building name, the lot or deck level, and a nearby entrance. A vehicle color and a clear description of its position can help distinguish it from others without sharing unnecessary personal details.

If you are near a busy road, explain where the car is safely parked and whether there are restrictions on reaching it. Do not stand in traffic or attempt to reach the vehicle through an unsafe area. If a person or animal is in immediate danger inside a vehicle, contact emergency services first.

03

Explain the symptom without forcing anything

There is a difference between a key locked inside the car, a fob that does not unlock it and a vehicle that does not recognize the key when starting. Describe any dashboard message and whether another key works. Mention a dropped or damaged fob and anything that changed before the problem appeared.

For a key that will not turn or is stuck, avoid forcing it. More pressure can turn a key problem into a broken-key problem. Explain whether the key enters normally and whether any part is already broken. An assessment can help identify whether the key, lock or ignition needs attention.

04

Confirm the plan before work begins

Expect to establish that you are authorized to access the vehicle. If your identification or ownership documents are locked inside, explain that during the call rather than assuming it prevents all help. The appropriate verification arrangements can then be discussed for your situation.

Ask about current availability, supported work for your vehicle and how the price will be determined. If a replacement key is involved, clarify which functions are included. Before the job is finished, check the agreed functions, such as unlocking and starting, and discuss the status of any remaining or missing keys.

Good to have ready

A couple of useful answers

Can you help when every car key is missing?

A replacement may be possible, depending on the vehicle and key system. Provide the make, model and year so support, identification requirements and the next steps can be checked.

Does a fob that will not unlock the car need replacement?

Not always. The symptom may involve the fob, its battery or another part of the vehicle's system. Describe what works and what does not before deciding on a replacement.
